Heritage Tomatoes for 2012

AUNT RUBY’S GERMAN GREEN – Late. Very large, 1-2lb light green fruit with pinkish interior. Sweet – tart flavour.
BLACK KRIM – Late. Very large, dark coloured, thin skinned, meaty fruits are incredibly juicy and can grow up to 1.5lb under semi drought conditions. Slightly smoky, salty flavor is great for salads or eaten straight off the vine. Heavy producer.
BIG RAINBOW – Mid season. Very large, 1-2lb very pretty bicoloured fruit. Delicious and sweet. Striking when sliced as the yellow fruit has neon red streaking through the flesh.
BRANDYWINE, RED or YELLOW – Late. Large, up to 1lb beefsteak type. Ideal for slicing or salads. One of the most famous heirlooms (1885, Amish) and the winner of many taste tests. Bright tangy flavour.
CHEROKEE PURPLE – Late. Medium sized 12oz fruits. Productive plants that are good in dry conditions. Unique dusty rose colour with a sweet rich, smoky flavour that rivals Brandywine. From Tenessee, pre 1890.
GREEN ZEBRA – Late. Medium sized, 2” yellow and green fruits with dark green vertical stripes. Emerald green flesh is juicy, sweet and mild. Very productive plants.
HARBINGER – Early. Medium sized, thin skinned red fruit. Terrific flavour. Introduced in 1910. Reliable, abundant producer.
JAPANESE BLACK TRIFELE – Mid season. Medium sized, purple - brown fruits. One of the best ‘black’ types. High yields of blemish free fruits which rarely crack. Rich, full flavour, great for canning or fresh eating. Bred in Russia.
LANDRY’S RUSSIAN - Early. Medium sized, 2 – 3” round, salad style red fruit. Great flavour and high yields.
MORTGAGE LIFTER – Early. Large, many over 1lb, meaty and vigorous red beefsteak type. Great flavour and good slicer with few seeds. Plants are highly productive and disease resistant.
PURPLE CALABESH – Late. Large, 3 - 6” fruit, convoluted and brownish-pink in colour. Called the ugliest tomato in the world! Its saving grace is the excellent flavour and ability to tolerate extreme drought conditions. 4 - 6ft. vines.
TIGERELLA – Early. Medium sized, 2 – 3” sweet tart red fruit with orange stripes is a good producer. A delight in any garden.
WONDER LIGHT – Early. Medium sized, 2 – 3” bright yellow coloured, lemon shaped fruit. Paste type with solid meat. Mild flavour. Keeps well due to firm texture. Bred in Russia.
YELLOW PEAR – Late. Small sized, sweet and juicy pear shaped fruit. Very old variety from the early 1800’s. Low in acid and easy to grow. Popular with gourmet chefs. Productive, long 6ft. vines.
