Spring has Sprung and we are ALMOST OPEN!

|
Another year has come around and it’s time again to send Happy Spring Greetings to all our loyal customers and friends! We are very proud to have been in business now for 24 years and we thank you for supporting us through the years. As we gear up for another busy season, and despite the inevitable hectic pace around here, I find joy in watching my apple blossoms pop open, our ducks play in the puddles, the bees start to do their important work and the robins dig for food. Spring is here, Yeah!
So what’s new this year? More plants! I focused my efforts last fall and winter researching new annuals and I am pleased to have chosen almost 40 new varieties of flowers and foliage to add our specialty annual collection. Highlights include some stunning new Begonia varieties that are good in sun or shade, the return of our Fuchsias, new and much improved Ivy and Upright Geraniums, a wonderful new annual Sedum variety, Dipladenias – a Mandevilla vine that is more bushy than climbing and stunning Sunpatiens – New Guinea Impatiens that thrive in sun or shade. Watch our future newsletters for more information! I hope you like my choices and are encouraged to try something new in your garden this year!
As always you can count on our plants to be healthy and well grown and our staff to be helpful and friendly. So mark our opening day – Friday April 28th on your calendar, it’s time to start thinking gardens again! Hope to see you on our opening weekend as we kick off our 2017 season!

New fruity selections for 2017
Over the past few years, we have seen an increased demand for fruit trees and bushes as more people decide to grow their own food. So this year we have substantially increased our selection of fruit plants and are running a new special event - Grow Fruit Day, all about fruit. It is easy to incorporate a few fruit bushes into existing ornamental or veggie gardens, or if you are feeling especially keen, why not make a designated fruit garden? Fruit trees require a slightly longer term plan, needing a little more space and commitment to annual pruning. In general, all fruit requires a sunny location and well drained soil with organic matter worked in if possible. So start planning your new fruit garden now!
Fruit bushes that we have grown include Rhubarb, Strawberry, Raspberry, Red Currant, Blueberry, Gooseberry and Blackberry. We are also bringing in varieties of Apple, Pear and Cherry trees. Over the winter, I discovered a line of fruit bushes that are more compact and have great ornamental value, perfect for containers. We are happy to be selling the Bushel and Berry brand of Blackberries, Blueberries and Raspberries. All our fruit plants are hardy to zone 4 or 5. We are happy to help with planning and selection.

Bright easy spring colour
There’s nothing like a perennial that provides that splash of early spring colour in a garden! Creeping Phlox is an easy to grow perennial that does just that – bright, happy and early colour. Our Phlox Red Wing and Blue Emerald are looking outstanding this year. They are low growing, spreading groundcover plants, so are best kept to the front of a bed or on a slope. They are fabulous to cover and soften rocks too. Plant in full sun and well drained soil, as they don’t like having ‘wet feet’. Creeping Phlox will be covered in flowers in May and afterwards become a mat of foliage that is easy to care for.

Spring garden clean up - start early!
Spring is definitely the crazy time in the garden. Once the warmer weather is on us, plants start to grow fast, weeds can be hard to keep up with and the feeling of being overwhelmed can quickly develop, and the season has barely started! The key to spring survival is to start early! Completing a thorough clean up in your gardens in April can help reduce the stress of dealing with a jungle later in May.
Here are some tips to get you started ->

Plant red and white annuals for Canada 150
I have a feeling that red and white annuals are going to be a hit this year, as gardeners seek to bring some Canadian pride into their gardens! Whether you need plants for hot sun, wet shade, upright or trailing, we have grown a huge selection of red and white annuals this season, so why not plan on incorporating this theme into your annual baskets, planters or in ground plantings? All plants are available as individual pots, or if picking up some ready grown décor is more your style, we have also grown a large variety of red and white hanging baskets and planters. Of course, as always we will be happy to help you with your creative decisions! Here are our selections.
