Rain is good!

Well, we never know what spring is going to throw at us - I think we have gone through every possible season in the last week! We had a very successful opening day – it was a gorgeous day and extremely busy. Our Grow Fruit Day was a little soggy and cold, but we welcomed a steady flow of intrepid customers to the farm. Happy visitors received a free strawberry plant and discounts off fruit plants, as well as plenty of good advice from us! As we all know however, rain is great for the gardens and we will be thankful for all these soakings later in the season. It’s a good time to check out the wet areas of your garden now – maybe they will be suitable for Primulas – see article below.

It’s not too late to drop off your planters and take advantage of our popular Custom Container Planting Service. Let us know your favourite colours and plants and we will design, plant and grow your containers for you. Pick up in about 6 weeks and they will be full and beautiful!

Plant Perennials Now

Over 100 varieties, all grown on the farm

This weather is perfect for planting perennials. They will withstand frost and cold and after all this rain, they will take right off. It’s a good time to fill any bare spots in your garden and get the plants established before the heat arrives. Our perennial house is filled with over 100 varieties of hardy, healthy plants, all grown on the farm. Of course, Pansies are fabulous too at this time of year. We have grown a large crop of white and red Pansies which are great to pop in now and show your Canadian pride!

Primula Pacific Hybrids

Bright early colour for wet spots

This low growing brightly coloured perennial spring beauty produces large flowers, held in small clusters in vibrant shades of yellow, maroon, lavender, white, pink and violet. The dark green foliage forms a low rosette. Plants reach 6-8” in height, so plant at the front of the garden for the best display. Primula loves to be in a wet and shady area. It will not tolerate drought in the summer, so be careful about location. In the right place, this plant will reward you with a gorgeous spring display year after year. Try in planters too, with Violas or Pansies for an early spring combination that will withstand frosts and all other spring weather!

Introducing our 2017 team

We grow AND sell!

We are very proud of our staff. They start work in February, literally digging their way into the greenhouses some days! They spend weeks mixing soil, filling pots, planting, watering, tagging, fertilizing, trimming and nurturing our crops, then all of a sudden at the end of April, it’s time to switch to retail mode and start selling! This is something that definitely sets us apart from many other plant retailers – the fact that the same people grow our plants as sell them. Running our business this way means that our staff have a very good understanding of the needs of our plants. I personally think this attention to detail and caring mentality really shines through in the superior quality of our plants!

We are always pleased when our employees return for multiple years. Right now, we have a wonderful working group. Kieron Rupke is back for her 7th year, Kelly French and Cathy Cook for their 3rd year. We were very happy to welcome Val White into our farm family this year and she is learning fast. Val is looking forward to getting to know all our regular customers and helping out with the selling of our crops. Our son Dan is working weekends in the greenhouses and at Creemore Farmers Market. Of course, you are bound to see Chris and our younger son Ben helping out too. All our staff and family are looking forward to welcoming you back to the farm this spring and are totally committed to making your trip here productive, helpful and fun!

Cut Flower Transplants

Grow your own bouquets this summer!

As most of you know, the Flower Farm was originally established in 1993 to grow flowers for cutting and drying. Over the years, as our business evolved and priorities changed, we stopped the field production (2001) and limited the sale of transplants to custom orders (2012). Over the last couple of years however, it seems as if people are becoming excited about home grown cut flowers again - I have noticed that more customers are interested in growing a designated cutting garden or just incorporating a few varieties into other gardens.

As a result, we now offer a selection of Katie’s tried and tested annual cut flower transplants. Look for Zinnia, Aster, Salvia, Feverfew, Sweet Annie, Tithonia, Snapdragon, Ageratum, Cosmos, Statice, Bells of Ireland, Verbena, Sunflower, Gomphrena, Rudbeckia, Statice, Sunflower, Celosia and Amaranthus. Many of these flowers are old fashioned or cottage garden varieties that have been improved by breeding over the years. You can be sure that by purchasing here, all varieties have been fully researched and trialed by Katie to provide the most productive and healthy stems for cutting. Why not try a few of these easy to grow flowers this year and enjoy your own cut flowers all summer long?

Stunning New Begonias

Cute Kiss Pink and Million Kisses Amour

Last year, in my plant researching adventures, I came across many types of annual Begonia boliviensis varieties. Unlike other varieties of tuberous Begonia such as Non Stop and trailing Illumination types, this grouping of tuberous Begonias grows well in full sun or dappled shade. I chose two varieties to trial this year – Cute Kiss Pink, a lovely soft pink and Million Kisses Amour, an orange – red flower with dark foliage. We have grown them both in hanging baskets and individual pots. The flowers are large, profuse and absolutely stunning! Habit is semi trailing, so wonderful for baskets or planters. If you’ve always loved tuberous Begonias but have too much sun, try these fantastic new types this year!

Katie's Tips

Hydrangeas Demystified

One of the most common questions that we are asked by visitors to the farm is ‘Why is my Hydrangea not blooming?’ It’s a fair enough question – I work with plants every day and I am still learning - Hydrangeas used to be so easy! 10 years ago there were only a few varieties, but in the past few years, plant breeders have been busy and we now have many different stunning varieties of hydrangea, each with slightly different care requirements. The first step to answering this common dilemma is to identify the type of hydrangea that you are growing. Once you have determined this, you can give it the correct conditions for flowering. I was at a Proven Winners conference last fall and our attention was drawn to a fabulous resource that Proven Winners has compiled. Check out this infographic for answers to your Hydrangea questions.
