Flower Farm turns 25!

A concise history… and ‘Thank You’!

It’s hard to believe that 2018 marks our 25th year in business. I feel as if we have raised a baby, blinked and then all of a sudden they are leaving home! The Flower Farm is more than a business for us – it is a way of life, being such an integral part of our lives for the last 25 years.

After a childhood in the UK surrounded by plants and plant people, a degree in Horticulture seemed the natural next step for me. New to Canada and newly married to Chris the owner of Complete Outdoor Services Inc (our landscaping and property maintenance business) we set out as a team with dreams and ambitions! We started with a small greenhouse, which we named ‘Cuba’ in 1993 and sold hanging baskets out of the back of our truck at the 400 Flea Market. Cuba is still used today for propagation and we later graduated to the Alliston Farmers Market and then Creemore Farmers Market which we still attend today. Allium Millenium

Award winning unique summer colour!

This unusual perennial is named the 2018 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association and we are excited to be growing it! Allium Millenium is an ornamental onion that flowers mid summer. Plants form a compact, neat upright clump of glossy green leaves. In late July and August a profusion of large 2” globe shaped rosy purple flower clusters appear just above the foliage. Many customers admire our spring flowering Allium varieties in our display gardens at the farm. This variety is shorter, only growing 15-20” tall and flowers in the summer, but has similar striking globe shaped flowers. Bees and butterflies adore the flowers’ sweet nectar but deer and rabbits steer clear. Find a sunny spot for this perennial beauty.

Katie’s Tips

Spring garden clean up - start early!

Spring is definitely the crazy time in the garden. Once the warmer weather is on us, plants start to grow fast, weeds can be hard to keep up with and the feeling of being overwhelmed can quickly develop, and the season has barely started! The key to spring survival is to start early! Completing a thorough clean up in your gardens in April can help reduce the stress of dealing with a jungle later in May.

Here are some tips to get you started ->

Spring garden clean up - start early!

We are very sad to announce that Smokey our beloved grey tabby cat, passed away this winter. Smokey will be remembered as a very friendly, handsome and laid back boy – nothing bothered him, from babies, kids, kittens, cats and dogs. He spent an idyllic 17 years with us, loving being outdoors as much as the sofa. One of his favourite things to do was to hang out with us in the greenhouses and once we opened to meet his many admirers! As a youngster he chose us, arriving on our doorstep and settling right in. We found out several years later when his previous owners came to buy plants that he had travelled here from New Lowell! We’ll miss you Smokey – you were such a fabulous cat and will be forever in our hearts.

Stunning new Petunias

Easy colour and great habit!

Trailing Petunias are one of the easiest annuals to grow. We grow a large selection of colours, with our variety list increasing every year. Trailing Petunias flower continually through the season, require very minimal maintenance and love heat and full sun. Plant in hanging baskets for the full effect of cascading blooms, or enjoy in lower planters or in the ground. Hummingbirds and other pollinators also love Petunias. Check out Supertunia Latte and Supertunia Lovie Dovie - these 2 new fantastic varieties are current favourites of mine!
