Annabel and Nora planting a Pansy for their Mom

We had a fantastic Mothers Day weekend – the weather was perfect – not too hot and not too cold. Over 40 kids enjoyed planting Pansies for their Moms. Coffee, lemonade and cookies were popular and everyone was so happy to see and feel THE SUN!! It was lovely to see many of our regular and loyal customers emerging after the winter along with many new customers too. Thanks to Kate from Everett, Janice and Natalie from Loretto, Norah from Creemore, Jo and Sherie from across the road, Sandy and Katrina from Schomberg, Nadia and Julie from Baxter, Inge from Mulmur and many, many others for your continued support!

Verbena Superbena

Must have all season colour!

Verbenas are sun loving annual plants, easy to grow and available in several colours. We grow the Superbena Royale series of Verbenas - including Chambray (dark blue), Romance (deep red), Plum Wine, White, Peachy Keen (peach) and Sparkling Amethyst (shades of pink with white centre). Verbenas are great spreaders, both in the garden as a ground cover or in containers where they will trail, growing about 6 – 12” in height. Flowers are formed in large showy balls which give great colour all through the season. Even after several frosts in the fall, Verbenas will still be flowering. The only maintenance required, besides fertilizing and watering is some dead heading.

My favourite varieties are Peachy Keen and Sparkling Amethyst. Peachy Keen combines well with oranges and reds but also looks fabulous with blues, while I love combining Sparkling Amethyst with purples and pinks. Butterflies love Verbena flowers too, so don’t wait to check out our hanging baskets, planters or individual pots of Verbena!

25th Birthday Hanging Basket Challenge

Vote for a chance to win!

Voting is now well under way in our Hanging Basket Challenge. Not only do you have a chance to win a beautiful hanging basket, but you will also be donating some cash to a worthy charity.

Here’s how it works:

Early March – Our employees and family members - Kieron, Dan, Kelly, Val, Cathy, Ben and Chris each designed and planted a 14” hanging basket, using no more than 6 plants per basket. The baskets have been growing along with the rest of our crops.

May 5 to May 27 – Visitors to the farm pay to vote for their favourite basket, (ballots $2 each or 3 for $5) with each vote being a chance to win the basket. (Retail selling price $65.) Vote as many times as you like!

May 28 – One ballot will be drawn to win each basket and the 7 basket winners will be contacted. The basket design with the most votes will be announced. The winning basket designer has bragging rights and will choose a charity for the proceeds to be donated to.

Hope you will participate in voting the next time you are at the farm!

Heritage Tomatoes

Colourful, fun and tasty!

Heritage or heirloom tomatoes are old style varieties that have been in production for at least 50 years. Over the years, advances have been made to plant breeding and production methods and these varieties are now rarely grown commercially.

Heritage tomatoes are available in a huge range of sizes, shapes and colours and have fantastic flavor. However, they are not resistant to a wide range of diseases like most hybrid varieties are. They breed true to seed, meaning that seed can be kept and started the following year again. Most are indeterminate plants, which need to be staked, growing very large and producing fruit for several weeks on long vines. Check out the heritage tomato varieties we're growing in 2018.

Ligularia Desdemona

Create a dramatic tropical effect!

Ligularia Desdemona is one of my favourite perennials! Its beautiful large dark green - purple foliage can create a bold tropical effect in the garden.  The yellow Daisy flowers rise above the foliage, blooming late summer and fall, offering excellent colour at a time of year that often needs a colour lift. Ligularia Desdemona is very easy to grow, reaching a height of about 3 feet and forming a large bushy clump of about 2 – 3 feet width over a few years.

It thrives in full to part shade but will also do fine in full sun if given enough moisture. When it is ‘happy’ it will seed freely and you will have some babies to replant or leave to fill out the patch. Don’t worry, it will not become invasive!! Beautiful planted singly as a specimen, but better in a group of 3 or more.

Gardening for Kids

Introducing children to gardening is a gift that will remain with the child the rest of their lives. I can still remember my Mum helping me plant seeds and take cuttings. My brother and I each had our own small gardens when young. (And look what happened – I have made a career and life out of growing plants!) Read the full article >

Physocarpus Summer Wine

Unique foliage!

This purple leaved Ninebark shrub is one of my favourites and I plant it a lot in our landscaping projects as well as here at the farm. The foliage of Physocarpus Summer Wine is really what makes this shrub so great – foliage is purple with dark stems, creating a gorgeous contrast against other green or yellow foliage. Pinkish white flower clusters appear in the spring to provide extra interest. This upright, bushy shrub should be grown in full sun and reaches a height of 5-6 feet. It is a fast grower and new growth can be easily trimmed in the fall or winter. This plant is a result of breeding by my favourite plant breeders, Proven Winners, so it is no wonder that it is such a great performer! Plant in a group if you have space, but singly is fine too. Next time you come to the farm, take a look at our gate plantings and you will see lots of these beauties!
